Searchit
A Usenet search utility.
amy@shoko.calarts.edu
Searchit is a perl program I wrote that allows you to
specify both a term to search for and a term that should appear
in the names of the groups you search. For example, you could
look for articles mentioning "government" in newsgroups with
the word "anarchy" in their names (such as alt.society.anarchy.)
Searchit will also print out the line from the newsgroup that
contained the searchterm, so you can see the reference. The idea
here is that you get to be rather picky in where you search
for something, and you get a sample of the content before you
decide to bring up the article in your newsreader. This program
came about as a byproduct of some of my recent internet-based artwork;
as such it is not terribly glitzy in itself. In other words, it
doesn't do anything slick such as launch your newsreader and call up
the article, and likely it never will, as this program is not really where
I'm spending most of my time... hopefully though it will come in handy
as a search utility.
What you need:
* a UNIX shell account with Perl 5 installed on the server
(if you have the UNIX account they've probably got Perl 5 installed.
Ask your systems administrator if in doubt.)
* access from your UNIX account to a USENET server
(if you don't have a default server called "news" at your site,
searchit will let you specify a different one. But again, if
you have the UNIX account, more than likely you also have a news
server called "news.")
You can get help with searchit by typing
searchit -h
